‘Waves 2’ 2016

I love the shapes and colours in waves, the play of light and shade, and the foam trails as the wave breaks then retreats.  Here are my wave studies, influenced by the great Brett Whiteley.

‘Watching the Waves’ 2016

As I was delivering work to a customer I noticed this Holden Panel Van parked at Cabarita, overlooking the headland and watching the surfers. Luckily it was still there on my drive home so I quickly snapped this image and had nothing to alter for the composition. A classic scene.

‘Towards the Sea’ 2016

This classic 1962 Volkswagen “Splitty” Kombi was one previously owned by myself. Mine had a teal and cream paint scheme. I have in this composition parked it at Palm Beach, on the Gold Coast, Australia. Currumbin Rock and ‘The Alley’ can also be seen in the distance, a renowned surf spot. This classic scene is reminiscent of many surf trips along any of our coastlines.

‘The Val’ 2016

This composition is one straight from my camera, taken of a Chrysler Valiant Safari station wagon during our annual classic car festival. ‘Cooly Rocks On’. I added the esky in the back to keep it in period.

‘The Alley’ 2016

An affectionate name for Currumbin Alley on the southern Gold Coast and a very popular surfing spot with the waves wrapping around the point to the creek.

‘Surfari’ 2016

My beloved 1940 Ford Woody Wagon, parked at a local headland.
I imported this vehicle from Oceanside California in 2011 and he continues to turn heads. It epitomises everything that is a “Surfari”. I couldn’t quite believe the number/licence plates in that combination were still available!

‘Surf Bug’ 2016

This composition is an imaginary one, a combination of photographs I took at Rainbow Bay on the Gold Coast, as well as of a beautiful VW Bug I saw one day. I added some surfboards on the roof rack – classic surf imagery!

‘Sunrise Session’ 2016

Linocut on paper
55cm x 75cm
Limited edition of 20

This classic surf wagon was first photographed by myself at our local annual retro rock and roll festival “Cooly Rocks On”. I have in this composition combined it with another photograph I had taken a few years ago when I lived at Tugun, on the Gold Coast, Australia. It was a stunning sunrise and caused me to turn back on my drive to work to enjoy it! This classic scene is reminiscent of many surf trips along any of our coastlines.

Taking its name from another well-known artwork of a similar subject, this composition shows a woman enjoying the beach and soaking up some sunshine. Her hair, wet and tangled from her recent swim, tumbles onto the towel. A Surf Lifesaving flag is seen in the distance near the shoreline.
